Ok, it kind of is, but one of the things you've probably noticed about twitter is the huge volume of less than inspiring content it's users generate on a daily basis. As we scan our home pages we'll probably ignore a certain percentage of it but it's worth reflecting on why that is and what are the key features of the content we like and feel we want to engage with. What we'll find is that really engaging content talks to our common purpose or holds a possible solution to the problems we are facing.
That's why firstly, when it comes to how we engage with Twitter, we need to know what we are about and secondly know who we are speaking to and what's important to them. Without that knowledge we won't have much purpose and our content is likely to be ignored. So, here's something to help, some practical things you can do right now to add power and leverage to your twitter experience: 1. Write Down Your Purpose You may have done this before, even if you have, do it again to refine it. Many business owners have never done this kind of exercise before but it's really important. If you don't know it, your customers won't either and your direction will become unclear. Bear in mind this process may take some time and involve some soul searching and deep thinking. Why does you company exist? What do you exist for? What is it you represent? What is your aspiration? You may have done this before, even if you have, do it again to refine it. In order to market yourself you need to know who you are talking to. What is it your customers care about? What problems do they have that you are the solution to? Knowing who they are and what they aspire to is important as it means you can speak directly or indirectly to their needs and wishes. Once you've nailed these two things, you've basically got a blueprint for all your Twitter (and marketing) activity.

Autumn is a great time to organise, clean up and get clear on your twitter strategy. It's a time of obvious change before the increase of activity comes in the lead up to Christmas. Here's a list of 6 things you can do to refine your twitter activity right now: 1. Refresh You Profile Add a new, fresh image for your profile pic and header image. Use a really beautiful background image too. Add new energy to your description (by re-writing it!) and add relevant #s to increase your visibility for searches. 1. Do Some Following/Followers Management It's a good idea to use a third party app to see who has un-followed you and to unfollow them if you no longer see their content as relevant. Also make sure you block any spam accounts! As well as giving you a better following to follower ratio this kind of management will help ensure that only content important to your brand will appear in your home feed. Note: whatever you do, don't tweet about un-followers - most unprofessional! 2. Get Into Your Lists Lists, if used well, add more organisation and refinement to your twitter experience. Lists allow you to have focussed content at your fingertips and can also build rapport and help position yourself as good source of informative, niche information. 3. Get Seasonal Autumn is amazing for obvious reasons: the colours looks great; the comfort food is tempting and people start switching their attention to different things. Exploiting the seasonal to the max is bound to get more RT's and build more empathy and engagement for your brand. Start creating beautiful tweets, with images that really trigger the imagination. 4. Get Selling From a purchasing perspective the Autumn is when people love to get into hobbies and sign up for educational products. They also start thinking about Christmas. Whilst you don't want to jump the gun, it's a great time to get a clear sales strategy in place for November and December and prime your audience early for festive purchases. 5. Use Your Branding Elegantly Many use images with their tweets, but how many use great branded graphics? Even images with your domain at the bottom can help drive hits and get people interested in what you do. It's worth using a package like Pagemodo or similar. These desktop apps enable you to create branded graphics very easily and usually come with an awesome amount of high quality stock images. Alternatively get your graphic designer to create a series of images that will position your brand perfectly. To summarise, this time of year is key and in the calm before the storm it's important to prepare for the weeks and months ahead. Some work now will make life easier later on and mean a much higher chance of success. |
